The state’s economic development commissioner is back from a trip to Detroit to press General Motors to bring more jobs back to its idled factory at Spring Hill. Meanwhile Governor Bill Haslam says that call is ultimately up not to GM, but to the demands of the market.
Haslam says his administration has been in ongoing talks with GM, and when it will bring workers back to Spring Hill is a simple question of when doing that makes business sense.
“None of us know what that time will be. GM has not made any promises to us at all along those lines, but I think we keep stressing how important that is to Tennessee. The state of Tennessee has an investment there as well. They have a big investment, and their response has always been when business conditions justify it they will get back in full production there.”
It’s been about two years since GM halted vehicle production in Spring Hill, though more than a thousand workers still make engines there. Officially GM has the plant listed as ‘on standby.’
