Donald Trump is leading the Republican field in Tennessee, according to a new poll from Vanderbilt University.
Twenty-nine percent of Republicans say they would vote for Trump if the primary election were held today. That’s 4 percentage points more than surgeon Ben Carson.
The New York businessman did best among Tea Party voters. He also performed well with non-Tea Party Republicans and born-again Christians, said Vanderbilt political scientist Josh Clinton.
“In every category, practically, Trump is in first or second place. So across the board, among Republicans in Tennessee, Trump has pretty strong support.”
Texas Senator Ted Cruz was third at 14 percent. Florida Senator Marco Rubio was fourth at 12 percent. No other Republican drew double-digit support.
On the Democratic side, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton holds a 20-point lead over Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.
Forty-eight percent said they back Clinton, compared to 28 percent for Sanders and 3 percent for former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley.
