The committee searching for a new chancellor for the Tennessee Board of Regents voted to suspend its work today, and it’s asked the full board to cancel the search altogether.
The search committee had been lined up to start interviewing candidates this week to replace current chancellor Charles Manning, who planned to retire this summer.
But committee chair Bob Thomas said Manning may now postpone his retirement. Thomas said the governor and legislature may look at reworking how state higher education is run.
Thomas also said with all the possible changes, right now it doesn’t make sense for TBR to commit on a new chancellor.
“It’s just not a good time, as UT decided, and as we decided this morning, to make a long term commitment to a new leader in the immediate future.”
Last week University of Tennessee President John Petersen stepped down, leaving his position to be filled by an interim for up to two years.
