State Republican Party Executive Committee members gathered in Nashville over the weekend and selected Chris Devaney as their new chairman.
Devaney narrowly beat Oscar Brock, who’s on the party’s executive committee, 28 to 25. Devaney is currently Senator Bob Corker’s state director. He says the most important issue facing Tennessee Republicans is extending their majorities in the state house and senate. He says this focus will benefit the republican candidate in 2010 governor’s race.
“Because it’s all about getting people out to vote, voter turnout, voting for republicans, and when we’re all working together, and focusing on the state legislative races, it will help the gubernatorial candidates as well.”
The job is effective immediately, so Devaney says he’ll be leaving Corker’s staff. He takes the reigns from Robin Smith, who has indicated she will be running for the third congressional district. The current Congressman from the Chattanooga-area, Zach Wamp, is giving up the seat to run for governor.
Members of the State Democratic Party elected Chip Forrester as their new chairman in January.
