Metro Schools Director Jesse Register will meet with Mayor Karl Dean at least monthly to share updates on testing, budget plans and school reform programs.
In Register’s first morning on the job, he met with students and teachers at Glencliff High School and then spent an hour with the mayor. Register says the meeting is symbolic of the open line of communication he hopes to have.
“I really appreciate the welcome. I look forward to the working relationship, and a very positive relationship going forward. Our children in Metro Nashville will benefit from this.”
It’s possible that some of these monthly meetings could get awkward. The state legislature may give Mayor Dean authority to appoint an all-new director if the district’s test scores don’t improve significantly this year. Dean says he’s impressed with Register so far, but he won’t say whether or not Register would remain in his new job if a takeover occurs.
