Preschoolers at the Goddard School of Gallatin act as ‘kid journalists’ for World News Day

Preschoolers at the Goddard School of Gallatin celebrated “World News Day”  by acting as “junior journalists” – interviewing each other and staff members at the school.

September 28 was dubbed “World News Day” by a global network of journalists and editors nearly a decade ago to highlight the role that reporters play in keeping citizens informed and strengthening democracy.

Kara Brumley and her husband David run the Goddard School in Sumner County, serving kids from six weeks to six years. Goddard Schools are a network of preschools that have core values which encourage kids to be inquisitive and follow their interests.

Every week, school staff ask students a new question. This week’s inquiry is, “What makes a good friend?”

The practice led them to participate in World News Day, which Brumley said aligns with the school’s inqury-based approach to learning.

Four year-old Benji sat down with David Brumley to interview him and learn more about Brumley’s childhood.

“What do you like to do when you are a kid?” Benji asked.

“When I was a kid, Mr. David loved to play sports,” he said. “Mr. David played baseball and basketball and football, and that was my favorite thing to do, was play in the yard and play sports all day long.”

“And soccer ball?” Benji asked.

“Soccer too,” he said. “Yeah, when I was little I played soccer too.”

Adelynn, also four years old, was curious about Brumley’s work.”

“What do you love most about your job?” she asked.

“My favorite thing about this job is working with the kids, because you guys always make Mr. David happy all the time and Mr. David always tells people if you’re having a bad day, come hang out with Mr. Dave for the day because you guys cheer me up and make me so happy all the time.”

There are nearly 700 Goddard schools across the country serving approximately 100,000 students in 37 states and Washington D.C.
