A Canadian investor and reality TV star has become a minority owner of the Nashville Predators. The hockey franchise announced Wednesday that Brett Wilson has purchased a five percent stake in the team.
Wilson is more known for his career as an investor, but he did enjoy roles on Canada’s Dragons’ Den and Risky Business. He is currently chairman of Canoe Financial, which has more than $2 billion in assets.
While based in Calgary, Wilson has owned a loft in Nashville since 2007. He says in a statement that he contemplated becoming part-owner of the Predators for several years and that now is the “right time” to join.
Predators chairman Tom Cigarran [like “cigarette” but with a “ran”] is making sure fans don’t start thinking the team might move to Canada. Cigarran says Nashville investors still represent a 90 percent stake in the franchise. And Wilson says he’s committed to keeping the NHL in town.
The Predators franchise has been working to fill the void left by former minority investor Boots Del Biaggio, who declared bankruptcy in 2008. Owners say they are in discussions with other potential investors, primarily from Tennessee.
