A group of religious leaders have decided to lend their support to the proposed Metro sales tax increase.
The Interdenominational Ministerial Fellowship is a social justice organization made up of Nashville clergy. The group had expressed concerns that the city needed to better manage its money rather than ask for more. But after meeting (today/yesterday) with city officials, IMF members agreed that the tax increase is necessary to adequately fund schools and create a tax relief program for the city’s seniors.
George Brooks, Sr. summed up the consensus opinion.
“We can never expect to have more, and pay less for having more at the same time. So for that reason, not only am I supporting it, I have already cast my vote.”
If passed, the measure would raise Metro’s sales tax to the maximum allowed by the state. A special election is scheduled for September 13. Early voting on the referendum is underway.
