Occupy Nashville members are breaking up their camp. The move comes as the Legislature is set to take up a bill that would evict the protesters from War Memorial Plaza, where they’ve been since early October.
Members are breaking down tents and hauling boxes of camping supplies to a moving truck for storage. Occupier Tom Sweet says, although the camp is going away, the group will still try to have some members at the Capitol around the clock.
“We’re not giving up. We disagree with corporate money buying our government. So, we’ll have a presence out here 24/7. We will have a table out here with flyers and pamphlets. And we will be flying our signs.”
Tomorrow, the state House and Senate will vote on a bill that bans illegal camping on state property. Officers from the Tennessee Highway Patrol shut down the Occupy encampment once before, but a Federal judge stopped that effort because of hastily installed rules from the state.
