Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain steered clear of political themes at Middle Tennessee State University Thursday night. But while speaking to business students about turning around Godfather’s Pizza, where he was CEO, Cain was interrupted by protesters chanting “we are the 99 percent.”
“Are you all done yet? Are you all done yet?”
Two young women walked out after being shouted down by others in the lecture hall.
“Don’t be embarrassed that those young people wanted to talk about that they’re part of the 99, the 99 percent. We have freedom of speech. Some people simply abuse it. That’s all. Some of them abuse it.”
Cain told students he agreed not to talk about politics on campus, though, he said, he was tempted.
Politics have become a very personal topic for Cain this week. Thursday he admitted to the Union Leader newspaper in New Hampshire that he did make regular payments to Ginger White, who said she and Cain had a 13-year affair. Cain says they were “no more than friends.”
He now heads home to Georgia for the first time since White came forward. Cain will meet face-to-face with his wife. Her reaction to the news, he’s told reporters, will determine whether he stays in the race.
