The Metro Nashville government is ready to hold its annual budget hearings. City departments will begin making proposals to Mayor Megan Barry on Monday.
She’s made several changes to the process. For one, departments have not been asked to make across-the-board budget cuts. And they are supposed to present plans that look ahead more than just one year.

The mayor is also encouraging departments to collaborate on projects.
Later this month,
a second round of hearings will take place for these joint efforts, which are being called “Public Investment Plans,” or
PIPs
.
These ideas are supposed to be new and innovative. They will
be presented similar to how tech startups perform “pitch nights” when courting investors. Only — in this setting — Metro departments will be vying for a slice of city funding.
About three dozen PIPs are in the works, with new ideas for bus fare payments, minority-run businesses, domestic violence services, and animal welfare.
