A Nashville police officer remains hospitalized after he was shot multiple times during a traffic stop near Bellevue Thursday. Police have arrested two suspects they say were involved in a prison break.
Joseph Jackson, an inmate serving a life sentence in Mississippi, was taken Thursday morning to an ophthalmologist for an eye exam. That’s where police say Courtney Logan burst in with a gun and freed Jackson, before the two men fled in a rented car.
It’s not yet clear why Sergeant Mark Chesnut pulled their vehicle over. But as he was processing a driver’s license, Nashville Police Chief Ronal Serpas says one of the men got out and shot Chesnut several times in the abdomen.
“Immediately, Sergeant Chesnut called for aid. The suspects fled the scene. Not long after that, undercover detectives of the Nashville Police Department picked up on the description of the vehicle, followed the vehicle around until sufficient police resources were available, and then made a traffic stop of that vehicle in downtown Nashville.”
Serpas says the suspects then gave themselves up and are now in custody.
Sergeant Chesnut had injuries to several internal organs around his stomach and was on life support. But Vanderbilt officials said after yesterday’s surgery that he could make a full recovery.
