Two bills undoing the easing of restrictions on concealed handguns passed by the state legislature this year will be before the Metro Council next week.
At-Large Council Lady Megan Barry says the bill allowing the beer board to regulate guns in establishments with beer permits isn’t going to pass legal muster. But she says the one opting out of guns-in parks, might.
“We are still waiting to hear from our legal counsel if that is going to fly, but as of now, we think that we can take that legislation forward and introduce it and it will not have a legal challenge.”
Barry is sponsoring both bills that Council members will vote on next week. The state law allowing the guns-in-parks bill does allow cities to opt-out. According to Spokeswoman Janel Lacy, the Mayor is against the guns-in-bars proposal and is currently working to see what are options are available to address the issue.
