Metro Council is considering an ordinance that would allow small distilleries to open in certain parts of Davidson County.
The bill comes after a state law passed earlier this year allowed certain counties to house small distilleries – what Councilman Mike Jameson calls “artisan breweries.”
Jameson is sponsoring a bill to allow such distilleries in downtown and industrial areas. He says it’d bolster the local economy.
“It offers local farmers and local merchants the opportunity to sell their produce in a whole new venue, and I think actually the facilities themselves would be the focus of tourism interest.”
Under the proposal, manufacturers could produce up to a thousand barrels a month, with each barrel holding up to 55 gallons of liquor. The bill passed the first of three readings in the council earlier this month.
