The six major candidates running for Nashville mayor committed to creating a $5 million dollar Affordable Housing fund at a forum held last night at the Downtown Public Library.
The money could build more affordable housing, rehab existing housing stock or provide assistance to those struggling to pay rent.
Candidate Karl Dean said the fund needs to have a reliable source of revenue.
“I think we have to look at some sort of committed source such as a transfer fee or some fee we know can generate this money on an annual basis.”
All the candidates, Buck Dozier, David Briley, Kenneth Eaton, Dean and Bob Clement agreed that affordable housing is key to a strong economy and keeps people from moving to surrounding counties.
Early voting has already started for the August 2nd election.
