If you want to help victims of Hurricane Katrina, there are several organizations collecting cash, food, and blood donations.
Second Harvest, one of the area’s largest food banks needs food and personal care items for victims. Suzanne Shumate says they need diapers, baby formula, and baby wipes. Food items include individually wrapped granola bars and cans of food with pop tops – this is because victims are unlikely to have access to a can opener.
You can drop off these items at Second Harvest Food Bank on Great Circle Road in Metrocenter or at area Kroger stores.
The Red Cross says cash and blood donations are urgently needed.
Officials do urge citizens to stay away from the Gulf Coast region because without power, water, or a place to stay, they could also become victims.
