The guns-in-parks bill is nearing passage after clearing the state Senate Judiciary Committee yesterday. Its companion bill has already passed the House.
The bill would allow carry permit holders from Tennessee and 19 other states to bring their guns into state and local parks.
Its sponsor, Mt. Juliet Senator Mae Beavers, aims to make carrying simpler for people with permits.
“You shouldn’t have to worry about leaving your gun in a car somewhere if you’re going to a restaurant or a park or whatever. You should be able to carry that gun – You’ve been checked out, they’ve checked your background, you’re legal to carry.”
Beavers says local governments could opt out with a vote from their city councils or county commissions.
The bill heads next to the Finance, Ways and Means committee.
