Fifteen candidates vying for one of the state’s three constitutional offices searched for the right answers to impress Republican Caucus members today.
In interviews for Treasurer, Comptroller and Secretary of State, GOP applicants were told to expect 12-hour days during the legislative session. Candidates were also asked about potential changes under a new Republican majority, which is a first since Reconstruction.
For instance, the Secretary of State could appoint new election administrators for all 95 counties. Rep. Matthew Hill tested the party loyalty of Campbell County mayor William Baird.
HILL: “It’s your position that they should change?”
BAIRD: “Oh. Yes sir. By all means.”
HILL: Ok. Thank you. Glad you’re here.”
BAIRD: “I mean, it’s been 140 years coming.”
The nominating committee of the Republican caucus will make recommendations for each position. While the full General Assembly will vote in January, the new GOP majority is expected to vote-out the sitting Democratic officers.
