The GM plant in Spring Hill will be down to 2,200 full-time workers after the latest round of buyouts.
An initial 545 employees took the $20,000 early retirement, which also comes with a car voucher. A deadline passed over the weekend for workers to rescind – 80 of them reversed course.
UAW local 1853 president Mike O’Rourke says those who chose to stick around are linking their careers to the success of GM.
“They’re hoping that the economy picks up and General Motors will need the volume they can put in Spring Hill.”
O’Rourke says GM has brought in temporary workers to help meet assembly line demands until November. That’s when production of the Chevy Traverse moves to Michigan and the Spring Hill plant is set to idle.
