Soldiers at Fort Campbell have been looking to the Clarksville city hall for tips on municipal government. City officials have even offered round-the-clock availability for advice while the 101st Airborne is deployed to Afghanistan.
Many units will be tasked with building municipalities in Afghanistan from the ground up. In March, Mayor Johnny Piper hosted 50 Fort Campbell officers to talk about the ins and outs of city government. Similar seminars have been conducted near other Army posts.
Lt. Col. J.B. Vowell, deputy commander of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, says Clarksville went a step further. He will deploy with cell phone numbers. Mayor Johnny Piper offered himself and the city’s department heads who will be on standby 24/7. Piper says “it’s the least we can do.”
