Work begins this week at Fort Campbell on a facility that moves financial assistance and child care closer to soldiers recovering from injuries and illness.
Fort Campbell’s Warrior Transition Unit fluctuates between 700 and 800 soldiers. Many were wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. They live together, but spokeswoman Cathy Gramling says they have to cross the sprawling post to take care of Army business.
“Right now their barracks is on one part of the installation. The Soldier and Family Assistance Center that’s already up and running is on a different part of the installation.”
The Army created 32 Warrior Transition Units in 2007, including the one at Fort Campbell. The new assistance center will be next door to where the soldiers live. It’s scheduled for completion in fall of 2010.
