A handful of film executives will gather in Nashville this week as part of the first Film-Com. It’s a new industry event that will lead into the Nashville Film Festival, and organizers hope Film-Com will raise the festival’s profile.
Nashville doesn’t attract people with the money and means to put out a commercial film like the most well-known festivals do. Screen writer and producer Andy van Roon says Film-Com could help jump-start the business side of the Nashville Film Festival.
“The only thing that really differentiates it from that added layer of Sundance, Toronto or Cannes is the fact that those have distribution entities coming to their festivals.”
Since the industry executives aren’t coming on their own, Film Com is paying their way with the help of the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau. They’ll fly 10 executives in to hear pitches and see clips from 20 independent film makers, some from Tennessee.
Companies that will be represented include The Weinstein Company and United Atlantic Capital. Van Roon says Film-Com – which stands for “completion” – will also give other film makers a way to connect with financing and distribution outlets.
