The McGavock High School band played on the steps of the Davidson County Courthouse today as Nashville’s new mayor, vice-mayor and Metro Council took their places on the public square.
“I Karl Dean…do solemnly swear…that I will support the constitution of the state of Tennessee…and the United States of America…and that I will faithfully…imparitially…and with fidelity…discharge the duties of Metropolitan County Mayor…without fear or favor…and for the public welfare…so help me god”
Mayor Karl Dean was sworn in by Criminal Court Judge J. Randall Wyatt. Vice-Mayor Diane Neighbors and the 40 Metro Council members took their oath from General Sessions Judge Leon Ruben.
Dean’s inaugural address was a reminder of his campaign speeches-the Shelby Street Bridge as a metaphor for connections and progress, his commitment to education, public safety, and economic development. He says it is daunting to ask the community to set increasingly high goals, but Dean says he has great confidence in the city.
“The thing that motivated me to run for office and has energized me every day for the last nine months is the idea that it is the people of Nashville who are driving this city forward, it is the people of Nashville who see how great this city can be, and I am thrilled that I have the opportunity now to serve you and to serve all of them. Thank you very much.” (cheering)
Dean’s first full day as mayor is Monday. He’ll hold an education town hall meeting at Pearl Cohn High School at 6:00 that evening.
