David Fox gained a mayoral endorsement Thursday from former competitor Jeremy Kane, who founded LEAD charter schools while Fox was chairman of the Metro School Board. The men said their shared views reach beyond education.
Kane said the role of the mayor is to create opportunities for others. And that’s what he saw Fox do firsthand in approving Kane’s charter school. In turn, that school helped students go on to college — including some who overcame poverty while living in the subsidized Cayce Homes in East Nashville,
where Kane chose to deliver his endorsement.
The housing complex is also undergoing a massive redevelopment — he said Fox has the right qualities to oversee projects like that as well.
“David’s talked about being open and inclusive, from issues such as the fairgrounds … to transportation, to infrastructure, to neighborhoods, to historic preservation,” Kane said. “I think that’s critically important.”
Kane said sharing the stage at more than 50 mayoral forums showed how closely their views match. He specifically mentioned improving infrastructure while not sending the city further into debt.
Kane said he didn’t like how partisan the race had become — and made a point of saying that he’s a Democrat who appreciates Fox’s ability to gain bipartisan support.
So far, the only other mayoral candidate to endorse is
attorney Charles Robert Bone, who backed Megan Barry last week.
