The Metro Schools board member representing Bellevue and West Nashville has resigned the seat, effective immediately. Alan Coverstone intends to vie for a new staff position with the district overseeing charter schools.
Coverstone won the district 9 board seat just last August. He’s the academic dean at the private all-boys school Montgomery Bell Academy.
Board chairman David Fox says he regrets losing such a ‘high-level thinker’ from the 9-member body. But he sees Coverstone’s interest in an administrative job as a vote of confidence.
“As a board member he sees the good, the bad and the ugly of the school system. And still having seen that, as one of really the nation’s premier educators, he’s concluded his career is best served by aligning himself with the operations of the school system.”
Fox says Metro Schools has had trouble attracting and retaining talent like Coverstone and calls his potential hire a possible turnaround.
The Metro Council will appoint Coverstone’s replacement until the August 2010 general election.
