Congressman Jim Cooper celebrated tax day by proposing the “Simple Return Act.” It’s a bill the Nashville Democrat describes as getting the IRS to do your taxes for you.
Since the IRS already has W-2s and 1099s for workers, the IRS would use the information to fill out a basic return for every American. If, instead, tax payers want to file their own return, they can throw away the automated form.
Cooper says an estimated 40 million Americans could benefit.
President Ronald Reagan initially proposed the Simple Return, but Cooper says at the time, the IRS didn’t have the computing power to do it. Now, he says, it does.
