Nashville’s new downtown convention center inched forward last night.
Council members approved on the second of three readings a bill that will allow Metro to spend up to $75 million to purchase land for the new building.
Three did not vote for the bill, including Councilman Robert Duvall.
“I’ve put the information out to the people in my district and they’ve overwhelmingly opposed spending the money for this land.”
Duvall says although this isn’t a vote on the convention center itself, he fears approving the land acquisition means the center is a done deal. Councilmen Eric Crafton and Michael Craddock were the other dissenting votes.
The Council also approved on second reading a bill increasing who can be fined for signs posted in the public right-of-way. Those paper flyers could cost the band, politician, club or promoter $50.00 per sign. Currently, one has to be caught in the act to be prosecuted.
