Johnson Controls plans to lay off most of the workers at its plant in Columbia. The factory makes seats and consoles for the Chevy Traverse, which General Motors makes in nearby Spring Hill.
The news from Johnson Controls has been poor for months. In September, the Wisconsin-based company announced restructuring plans Last week, it withdrew an already gloomy financial guidance statement. The company’s fourth quarter production is expected to be 25% lower than the same period last year.
Currently, there are about 170 workers at the Columbia plant. 125 will be let go, according to a report filed with the state. The layoff follows a fight over unionization at the factory. Workers went on strike for over a week this summer when the company refused to negotiate with the United Auto Workers.
