A bill to protect Metro government’s gay employees from discrimination is up for its second of three votes tonight at the city council meeting. But a competing bill from Antioch Councilman Sam Coleman will also be introduced.
Coleman hopes his proposal counteracts the anti-discrimination bill. He says he’s never liked the idea of separating out who is protected from discrimination.
“Suppose you come back and you have this same perception by Jews, by Christians, by atheists, and then were would we be then?”
Coleman’s legislation states that the hiring or promotion of employees cannot be based on non-merit factors such as social characteristics.
Metro Legal director Sue Cain has said Coleman’s bill does not provide any greater protection for gays and lesbians.
