Tennesseans would have to show their drivers licenses to register their vehicle or renew their license plates under a bill which passed in the state House of Representatives Thursday.
The measure is intended to make sure residents get their car tags in the county where they actually live.
Rutherford County officials, in particular, have been complaining that some residents avoid a wheel tax by crossing county lines, where clerks don’t mind the extra business.
Murfreesboro Representative Donna Rowland got the House to approve the bill, but it will have to be resurrected from a closed Senate committee to go forward this session.
The passage of the House version does at least keep the issue alive for next year.

The bill is HB 2052 Rowland/SB 1686 Ketron.
The Senate version of the bill is in “general subcommittee” of the Senate Transportation Committee, code for a bill in limbo. Senate sponsor Bill Ketron could try to get the committee to meet quickly to send the one bill out to the Senate floor, or Ketron could wait and act on the bill in 2011.
