Businessman Ward Cammack will focus his run for governor around building a more sustainable Tennessee. The Nashville democrat says the state has to change its approach on the economy and the environment.
Cammack says the current downturn signals a permanent change in the way the economy works, which Tennessee can’t afford to ignore.
He says the state is on the right track with projects like its biofuels initiative in partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and its proposed solar farm. And he says making such investments boosts the local economy in the short term.
“Our economy benefits more by investment in this direction than simply waiting for that investment to pay off. It provides a very immediate payback.”
Cammack released a policy paper on sustainability, which he says is the basis of his run for governor. Among other things, he calls for the state to switch to biodiesel vehicles and enact a bottle bill to encourage more recycling.
