This summer, there should be fewer mosquitos in one West Nashville neighborhood. That’s the goal of the third-annual backyard inspection being conducted tomorrow by the Metro Health Department.
Toxicologist Sanmi Areola says health department staff and volunteers will go door to door in an area along West Hamilton Road. He says mosquitos carrying West Nile virus have been found there consistently for the last several years.
“The idea is to sensitize the community to let them know what they can do to prevent mosquito bites and also to reduce breeding sites for the mosquito.”
The inspections will identify places where mosquitos may breed.
If there are places in a yard where water naturally collects and grows stagnant, Areola says homeowners can ask the health department to apply chemicals that prevent mosquito breeding. In areas where the insects reach adulthood, residents are asked to alert the department so mosquitos can be trapped and tested for disease.
Arreola says anyone in Davidson County can request an inspection.
