Tennessee Republicans who are interested in applying for one of the three state constitutional officer positions have until 4:30 today.
Investment Banker Ira Brody told WPLN yesterday that he’s submitting paperwork for the state treasurer’s job. He’s donated more than $100,000 to Republican PACs and candidates in this election cycle. The House Republican Caucus would not say yesterday whether any other applications had been received.
This is the first year Republican lawmakers will select their nominees for the post via-application. That’s because this is the first year where it matters who their nominees are. After taking the House in November, Republicans now control both state houses for the first time in 140 years.
State Democrats reelected the current office holders as their nominees last month—Dale Simms for state treasurer, Comptroller John Morgan and Secretary of State, Riley Darnell. Lawmakers from both houses and both parties will elect constitutional officers in January.
