Metro Schools Director Jesse Register says better pay and possibly a free Master’s degree will recruit and retain better teachers.
Register says he’s already started talks with Vanderbilt University about
paying for the degree in exchange for a five-year teaching committment in the district.
While speaking to Metro’s Education Committee Register said another way to keep teachers is to pay as much or more than other nearby districts.
“We’ve got to have the best salaries in the region if we’re going to recruit 600 plus new, good teachers every year at our school system.”
Next week Schools Director Register and Mayor Karl Dean will co-host a meeting looking into teacher incentive pay. Math, science, and special education continue to be the areas where teacher recruitment falls short.
