Governor Phil Bredesen has one week to decide whether or not he’ll sign a bill allowing licensed gun owners to carry their weapons in state and local parks.
Bredesen says his veto of the so-called guns-in-bars bill was simple because the law crossed what he calls a “line of sensibility.” Allowing guns in parks, Bredesen says, is not so black and white.
“I will say, I don’t think it has the same severity in the sense of its not mixing alcohol with guns, which is the really dangerous piece of it for me.”
Though ideologically opposed, Bredesen admits he did not put on a full-court press to prevent a veto override of guns in bars. With the increasing need for deeper state budget cuts, the governor says he has matters more important than gun bills on which to spend his political capital.
